Ultra High Purity Water Systems: How Do They Work?
Ultrapure Water Systems (UPW) are engineered to push water purity to its theoretical limit. In high-tech industries such as semiconductors, pharmaceuticals, and photovoltaics, ultrapure water is treated as a critical "industrial solvent." These systems remove virtually all impurities—including ions, organics, and microorganisms—leaving only pure H2O molecules.
To maintain peak performance, an ultrapure water plant must operate with 24/7 constant recirculation. Stagnation can lead to rapid bacterial growth and a drop in resistivity. Below is the core multi-stage purification process integrated into every AOMI system:
1. Pre-treatment System (Primary Purification)
Pre-treatment systems used in ultrapure water systems typically include sand filters, activated carbon filters, and water softening. Effective pre-filtration is essential to protect expensive downstream membranes and resins. These steps prepare the water for further purification:
Sand Filters:Remove large particles like sand, rust, and other suspended solids. Activated Carbon Filtration: Remove residual chlorine and organic compounds. Residual chlorine must be eliminated to prevent damage to the downstream reverse osmosis (RO) membranes. Water Softening & Antiscalant: Removes calcium and magnesium ions to prevent scaling and protect expensive reverse osmosis membranes and resins.
2. Single/Double Pass Reverse Osmosis (Core Demineralization)
Reverse Osmosis (RO) purification is the engine of the water treatment process. By applying high pressure through semi-permeable membranes, it rejects 95%-99% of dissolved salts, colloids, and bacteria. Whether using a water deionizer or a distillation setup, RO remains the most cost-effective method for bulk contaminant removal in industrial water purification systems. This stage bridges the gap between raw water and deionized water (DI water), integrating seamlessly with distillers and other water purification equipment.
3. Electrodeionization (EDI) Technology (Advanced Polishing)
EDI system is the critical step for converting pure water into ultrapure water. After reverse osmosis treatment, any remaining ions are removed using an electrodeionization (EDI) system. Combining ion exchange and electrodialysis technologies, EDI continuously removes ions through an electric field without requiring acidic or alkaline regeneration, making it an eco-friendly solution. Provides a stable, chemical-free supply of Type I ultrapure water, high-resistivity output (up to 18.2 MΩ - cm) while reducing environmental impact.
4. UV Sterilization & TOC Reduction
Ultraviolet light at wavelengths of 185nm and 254nm is used to: 185nm UV: Specifically designed for the degradation of Total Organic Carbon (TOC). 254nm UV: Effectively sterilize and kill bacteria, ensuring that water remains microbiologically safe.
5. Polishing Resin (The Final Precision Barrier)
For the most demanding applications, nuclear-grade polishing resins act as the final defense. This stage further lowers ion concentrations to trace levels and reduces TOC. It also acts as a buffer against feedwater fluctuations, ensuring the ultrapure water quality remains consistent and stable.
Achieving stable, high-purity water requires a customized approach. At AOMI Water Treatment, our engineers provide comprehensive water management plans and professional installation of ultra-high purity water systems. Safety Note from AOMI Engineers: While it is the pinnacle of purity, ultrapure water is not suitable for drinking. Because it is entirely devoid of minerals, it is highly aggressive and will actually "leach" essential ions and minerals from the human body if ingested.
